The Story Behind the Design

Genji Reverie reinterprets a scene from “Aoi” (葵, Heartvine), the ninth chapter of Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji. Murasaki stands on a Go board while Genji trims her long hair, with an attendant nearby. The board has become a small platform within a scene of courtly life.

The figures, patterned robes and green floor are adapted around the lacquered lamp body. Gold leaf and dark metal fittings frame the scene beneath a shade shaped after the Japanese amigasa woven hat.

The founder

From architecture to objects

For Michio Fujinami, architecture, interiors and the objects within them form one living environment. Kosei Art brings this philosophy to furniture and objects through Japanese cultural references and Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship.

Qualified as an architect in Japan and Singapore, he founded Fujinami Architects & Associates in 1989. The practice received the BCA Best Buildable Design Award in 1999 for its Sumitomo Warehouse project.
