The Story Behind the Design

Shinsei Bloom takes inspiration from details of Sakai Hōitsu’s Flowing Water and Seasonal Flowers Screen (流水四季草花図屏風), an Edo-period work from the 19th century in the Tokyo National Museum. Seasonal flowers and curling leaves gather beside a winding blue stream.

Selected motifs are adapted around the lamp’s narrow body, bringing the painting’s movement into a vertical form. Gold leaf, lacquer and dark metal fittings frame the floral design beneath a shade shaped after the Japanese amigasa woven hat.
