Why You'll Love It

  • Designed by architect and artist Michio Fujinami
  • Japanese-inspired imagery and decorative detail
  • Hand-applied lacquer finish

The Story Behind the Design

The Kuro Iris design draws on Ogata Kōrin’s Irises, a pair of six-panel screens from the 18th-century Edo period, held by the Nezu Museum in Tokyo. Blue-purple iris blooms and green leaves form rhythmic groups against a luminous gold ground.

The subject recalls the Eight Bridges episode of The Tales of Ise, where the sight of irises prompts a traveler’s poem of longing. Kosei Art adapts this meeting of nature, pattern and cultural memory to a lacquered Go board and its two bowls.

This separate work by Kōrin shares the iris imagery and Eight Bridges literary theme. The GB-03 design takes its primary inspiration from his 18th-century Irises screens in the Nezu Museum.

The founder

From architecture to objects

For Michio Fujinami, a building, its interior and the objects within it form one living environment. His architectural practice brings Japanese aesthetics into harmony with the culture, climate and surroundings of each place.

Kosei Art brings this philosophy to the scale of furniture. Historic Japanese imagery gives each piece a cultural point of departure; Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship gives it surface, depth and presence in the home.

Qualified as an architect in Japan and Singapore, he founded Fujinami Architects & Associates in 1989. The practice received the BCA Best Buildable Design Award in 1999 for its Sumitomo Warehouse project.
