The Story Behind the Design

The floral details of the Shinsei Bloom Go Set draw on Sakai Hōitsu’s Flowing Water and Seasonal Flowers Screen (流水四季草花図屏風), an Edo-period work from the 19th century in the Tokyo National Museum. Its distinctive groupings of hydrangeas, white peonies and red blossoms provide the starting point.

Kosei Art recomposes these motifs within fan-shaped gold fields on black lacquer, carrying the flowers onto the matching bowls. The design adapts details of the painting to a game set for play and display.
