Why You'll Love It

  • Designed by architect and artist Michio Fujinami
  • Japanese-inspired imagery and decorative detail
  • Hand-applied lacquer finish
  • Made to order

The Story Behind the Design

Ryu no Mon draws on Soga Shōhaku’s Dragon and Clouds (雲龍図 / Unryū-zu), painted in 1763 and held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Originally spread across eight sliding-door panels, the composition sends a dragon through swirling clouds and mist, using rich variations of ink to give the creature movement and presence.

Kosei Art carries details of this composition onto lacquered cabinet doors. The product name, “Dragon Gate,” separately recalls the legend of a carp transformed into a dragon after overcoming the rapids: a metaphor for perseverance and achievement.

The founder

From architecture to objects

For Michio Fujinami, a building, its interior and the objects within it form one living environment. His architectural practice brings Japanese aesthetics into harmony with the culture, climate and surroundings of each place.

Kosei Art brings this philosophy to the scale of furniture. Historic Japanese imagery gives each piece a cultural point of departure; Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship gives it surface, depth and presence in the home.

Qualified as an architect in Japan and Singapore, he founded Fujinami Architects & Associates in 1989. The practice received the BCA Best Buildable Design Award in 1999 for its Sumitomo Warehouse project.
