Why You'll Love It

  • Designed by architect and artist Michio Fujinami
  • Japanese-inspired imagery and decorative detail
  • Hand-applied lacquer finish
  • Made to order

The Story Behind the Design

Nanban Voyage draws on Nanban byōbu, Japanese folding screens depicting encounters with Portuguese traders and other overseas visitors in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Ships, goods, processions and unfamiliar dress became subjects for richly detailed compositions on gold grounds.

These paintings record a moment of travel, commerce and cultural encounter. Kosei Art brings their narrative imagery onto a lacquered credenza, where a historic scene becomes part of a contemporary interior.

The founder

From architecture to objects

For Michio Fujinami, a building, its interior and the objects within it form one living environment. His architectural practice brings Japanese aesthetics into harmony with the culture, climate and surroundings of each place.

Kosei Art brings this philosophy to the scale of furniture. Historic Japanese imagery gives each piece a cultural point of departure; Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship gives it surface, depth and presence in the home.

Qualified as an architect in Japan and Singapore, he founded Fujinami Architects & Associates in 1989. The practice received the BCA Best Buildable Design Award in 1999 for its Sumitomo Warehouse project.
