The Story Behind the Design

Like the red Shinsei Bloom table, CT-02B draws on Sakai Hōitsu’s Flowing Water and Seasonal Flowers Screen (流水四季草花図屏風), an Edo-period work from the 19th century in the Tokyo National Museum.

Hydrangeas, white peonies and other seasonal flowers are adapted from the screen’s flowing-water composition. The black version frames these motifs with a broader field of lacquer and shaped gold leaf, giving the same source painting a different presence in the room.
